24783. Lieut. Ensign Otis. Born on 29 Jan 1691 in Scituate, MA.73 Ensign died in Nov 1774 in Scituate, MA.73 Occupation: tanner.

Ensign inherited the Ensign property; house and lands, with the tannery established by his father. He was a Representative to the General Court 1751-1753 from Scituate.47

On 6 Jan 1713/4 when Ensign was 22, he first married Mary Barker (15693) , daughter of John Barker Esq. (9530) (ca 1650-1 Dec 1729) & Desire Annable (6358) (Oct 1653-24 Jul 1706), in Scituate, MA.90 Born ca 1690 in Marshfield, MA.275

Ensign second married Hannah [Otis].

According to the Otis Genealogy161, Ensign Otis married Hannah, the daughter of Jeremiah Cushing, but that Hannah was otherwise married.2 Deane says a daughter of Capt. James Little married Ensign Otis.56

In 1729 John was living on which is now called Branch Street. He left no family of record.47

John lived in Boston, where he kept a public house about 1750.161

On 1 Feb 1715 when John was 20, he married Leah Stodder (38224) , daughter of Dea. Samuel Stodder (25870) (11 Aug 1670-25 Jul 1762) & Elizabeth [Stodder] (ca 1670-6 Mar 1749), in Scituate, MA.90 Born on 10 Apr 1696 in Scituate, MA.73

24785. Stephen Otis. Born on 3 Nov 1697 in Scituate, MA.73 Stephen died in Scituate, MA, on 20 Sep 1756; he was 58.73,47 Buried in Union Street Cem., Scituate Centre. Occupation: mariner.

24786. Dr. Isaac Otis. Born in 1699 in Scituate, MA.161 Isaac died on 11 Nov 1777 in Scituate, MA.73 Buried in South Parish Cem. Norwell.

Isaac was born in the Ensign house in Scituate.47

Dr. Isaac, the first regular bred physician who settled in Scituate, and to whom the Town 'Voted a settlement of £100 to encourage him to remain in the Town,' in 1719. “He is remembered by some of our aged people as a gentleman of uncommon accomplishments of person and of mind.”56

He purchased first a property on what is now called Old Oaken Bucket Road, near Greenbush Village, known as the ‘widow Nichols property,’ near George Moore’s bridge. He lived there until 1723, when he bought of Joseph Nash the house near Stony Cove Brook, built by him in 1700. There was an exchange of properties at this time, Joseph Nash taking title to the larger estate, and Dr. Otis, the smaller, which was more desirable situated for a doctor, being located on the main highway leading to the ‘up river settlement.’47

On 25 May 1719 Isaac married Deborah Jacob (30685) , daughter of Dea. David Jacob (17698) (20 Jun 1664-10 Feb 1748) & Sarah Cushing (16534) (26 Aug 1671-24 Sep 1723), in Scituate, MA.90 Born on 22 Apr 1698 in Scituate, MA.73 Deborah died in Scituate, MA, on 17 Mar 1783; she was 84.73 Buried in South Parish Cem. Norwell.

Job and Thankful were first cousins, their fathers being brothers.

On 16 Feb 1726 Thankful married Job Otis (25908) , son of Job Otis (12312) (20 Mar 1677-1758) & Mercy Little (22491) (26 Feb 1678-1755), in First Parish Church, Scituate.90 Born on 28 Mar 1702 in Scituate, MA.73 Job died aft 12 Dec 1781. Occupation: trader.

Job lived first in Hanover, near Circuit St., in the Drinkwater section, where he was a member of the church in 1728/29. He inherited the farm on which his father resided, described as ‘on both sides of the road being about 60 acres with the buildings & my three acres at Buck’s field & my seven acres of salt marsh on the east & west side of Damon’s creek next the beach, also my 30 acres of woodland cedar swamp near the mill brook also about 60 acres of uplande meadow which I bought of William Ticknor and others joyning to Scituate harbour also about one hundred acres of land which I bought of Thomas Clark and others with the buildings on both sides of the way at a Place called the Clay pits.’ The will of Job Otis of Scituate, yeoman, dated 12 Dec. 1781, names wife Prince; dau. Eunice; sons Job, David, Prince and Abijah; daus. Mercy Curtis, Thankful Otis, Betty Sutton and Deborah Vinal.47

The births of Job’s children by his second wife do not seem to be recorded anywhere.

24789. Joseph Otis. Born on 16 Mar 1709/10 in Scituate, MA.73 Joseph died in Scituate, MA, on 11 Sep 1788; he was 78.73 Buried in Union Street Cem., Scituate Centre.

Joseph and Mercy lived at the ‘Two Stacks’ with her brother Barnabas.47

From William A. Otis’s Memoir of the Otis Family:161
    Joseph was representative from Boston, and keeper of the jail; also mariner, and sheriff of Suffolk Co. After his death, his widow married Rev. John Hancock, the father of the governor.
    Joseph and his descendants occupied for many years the old house, built about 1700, known as ‘The Old Two-Stacks’. This house, however, was not built by Joseph, but by his wife’s family, the Littles.

On 2 Feb 1740 when Joseph was 29, he married Mercy Little (23999) , daughter of Capt. David Little Esq (22492) (18 Mar 1680/1-9 Feb 1779) & Elizabeth Southworth (10498) (29 Sep 1686-10 Apr 1743), in First Parish Church, Scituate.90 Born on 8 May 1724.

Joshua settled in Scituate.161

Johsua was part owner of the schooner Polly 1784, and of the schooner Friendship 1788.47

On 13 Dec 1735 (int) Joshua married Hannah Barker (29473) , daughter of Capt. Samuel Williams Barker (15691) (23 Apr 1686-6 Aug 1754) & Hannah Cushing (20228) (26 Mar 1687-), in Scituate, MA.73 Born on 16 May 1711 in Scituate, MA.73 Hannah died in 1795 in Scituate, MA.161
