12607. Lieut. Samuel Paine. Born ca 1652 in Eastham, MA.105 Samuel died on 13 Oct 1712 in Eastham, MA.146,101 Samuel was “cut down by a fever”.

Samuel “settled within the limits of the present town of Eastham, near the house of the late Deacon Joshua Paine. He was much employed in public affairs. He was six years selectman of Eastham, and for some time lieutenant of the military company.”101

On 31 Jan 1682 Samuel married Patience Freeman (5003) , daughter of Maj. John Freeman (1977) (ca 1626-28 Oct 1719) & Mercy Prence (10074) (4 Jan 1631-28 Sep 1711), in Eastham, MA.146 Born ca 1655 in Eastham, MA. Patience died on 15 Feb 1745.247

On 24 Apr 1679 Mary second married Israel Cole, son of Daniel Cole (ca 1614-21 Dec 1694) & Ruth Chester (ca 1627-15 Dec 1694), in Eastham, MA.146 Born on 8 Jun 1653 in Eastham, MA.66,146 Israel died ca 1724 in Barnstable, MA.101

12609. Capt. Thomas Paine. Born ca 1656 in Eastham, MA. Thomas died on 23 Jun 1721 in Truro, MA.445 Capt. Thomas Paine, Esq. dyed the 23rd day of June in the year 1721. Buried in Old North Cemetery, Truro.445

“Thomas Paine, the second son [of Thomas Paine], born in 1657, was a man of prominence. He succeeded Mark Snow, as clerk of Eastham, in 1695, and was yearly elected until 1701, when he was succeeded by his younger brother, John. He was an excellent clerk. He was a selectman of Eastham seven yeras. Hebecame a landholder at Pamet, now Truro, adn removed there and settled on the north side of Little Pamet river, wehre the house spot is yet to be seen. He was clerk of the proprietors many years. He was selectman of Truro seven years, representative five years, and town clerk several years. He was justice of the peace, deacon of the church, captain of the military company, and a special justice of the court of common pleas, to which office he was appointed July 5, 1713. He died June 23, 1721, in the 65th year of his age. He was twice married, and father of fourteen children. His descendants are widely scattered, numerous and highly respected. From his daughter Hannah descended the late Hon. Horace Binney of Philadelphia.”101

On 5 Aug 1678 Thomas first married Hannah Shaw, daughter of Dea. Jonathan Shaw (ca 1631-30 Jul 1701) & Phebe Watson (ca 1636-), in Eastham, MA.146 Born ca 1661 in prob. Lakenham, now North Carver, MA.403 Hannah died on 24 Jul 1713 in Truro, MA.402 Mrs. Hannah Paine the Wife of Capt. Thomas Paine dyed the twenty-fourth day of July in the year of our lord 1713. Buried in Old North Cemetery, Truro.445

12611. Elisha Paine. Born ca 1658 in Eastham, MA. Elisha died on 7 Feb 1736 in Canterbury, CT.101

Elisha was a resident of Barnstable in 1689, but moved back to Eastham and resided in “Little Skaket Neck” until 1703.101

“After marriage Elisha and Rebecca Paine settled first at Eastham, but where in Barnstable in 1689. They returned to Eastham and resided there until about 1703, when they removed to that part of Plainfield, now Canterbury, Conn., where he purchased a tract of five hundred acres of wild land. Here he took an active part in all public affairs. He was one of the founders of the church in that town in 1711.”240

On 20 Jan 1685 Elisha married Rebecca Doane (7442) , daughter of John Doane (2861) (ca 1635-15 Mar 1707/8) & Hannah Bangs (6110) (ca 1644-aft 1677), in Eastham, MA.146 Born on 12 May 1668 in Eastham, MA.146 Rebecca died in Canterbury, CT, on 19 Dec 1758; she was 90.101

John, admitted freeman at Eastham June 1690; selectman for five years; clerk 1703-1709; Treasurer of Eastham 1709-1730; Representative to the General Court seven years from 1703 through 1725.

John Paine’s great-grandon was John Howard Paine, author of “Home, Sweet, Home.”101

On 14 Mar 1689 when John was 28, he first married Bennett Freeman (5010) , daughter of Maj. John Freeman (1977) (ca 1626-28 Oct 1719) & Mercy Prence (10074) (4 Jan 1631-28 Sep 1711).247 Born on 7 Mar 1670/1 in Eastham, MA.175 Bennett died in Eastham, MA, on 30 May 1716; she was 45.146

12613. Nicholas Paine. Born ca 1662/3 in Eastham, MA. Nicholas died in 1733.101 Occupation: miller and farmer.

In 1699 Nicholas married Hannah Higgins, daughter of Jonathan Higgins (Jul 1637-) & Elizabeth Rogers (29 Sep 1639-bet 2 Jan 1677/8 and 4 Jul 1679).247 Born in 1672.247 Hannah died on 24 Jan 1731/2 in Eastham, MA.146

12614. James Paine. Born on 16 Jul 1665 in Eastham, MA.101 James died in Barnstable, MA, on 17 Nov 1718; he was 53.101

James “went to Barnstable to reside in 1689. He was a school teacher, miller, cooper and clerk. He was in Captain John Gorham’s company at the expedition against Canada in 1691, as ‘clerk.’ For his services, his heirs in 1736 received a grant of land in Maine. He was the first clerk of the East precint or parish in Barnstable. He died at Barnstable, Nov. 12, 1718, and lies buried in the old cemetery, where a headstone marks the spot; he also was a man of literary turn of mind. He was a member of the Barnstable church.”101

On 9 Apr 1691 when James was 25, he married Bethiah Thatcher (12997) , daughter of Col. John Thatcher (17 Mar 1637/8-8 Mar 1713) & Rebecca Winslow (4714) (15 Jul 1643-14 Jul 1683).247 Born on 10 Jul 1671 in Yarmouth, MA. Bethiah died on 8 Jul 1734; she was 62.247

Son Thomas was minister at Weymouth 1719 through 1734.86

12615. Joseph Paine. Born ca 1667 in Eastham, MA. Joseph died on 1 Oct 1712 in Eastham, MA.146

Joseph “removed from Eastham to Harwich, now Brewster, before 1700. He was one of the founders of the Brewster church, Oct. 17, 1700. He was selectman of the town in 1701, and by successive elections until 1711. He was chosen town clerk in 1706, and annually chosen until his death, Oct. 1, 1712. He appears to have enjoyed athletic feats in his youthful days. His nephew in his journal syas: ‘He was very stout, and flung Col. Thacher, the Champion of Bay State, at Commencement.’ He was an exemplary member of the church. ... Most of his descendants are in Maine.”101

On 27 May 1691 Joseph married Patience Sparrow (23329) , daughter of Capt. Jonathan Sparrow (ca 1629-21 Mar 1707) & Hannah Prence (10073) (ca 1629-25 Nov 1698), in Eastham, MA.146 Born on 25 Oct 1675 in Eastham, MA.247 Patience died in Barnstable, MA, on 25 Oct 1745; she was 70.343
