3261. John Turner Sr. Born ca 1621 in Terling, Essex. John was baptized in Terling, Essex, on 24 Mar 1621.131 John died aft 20 May 1697 in Scituate, MA.

John settled 30 rods north-west of Union bridge, where he erected a tannery. Twenty acres were laid out for John, east of Barstow’s hill and adjoining the third Herring boork; his son Isaac lived on this land.56 He held numerous town offices, and with his younger brotgher, John Turner, known as John, Jr., served on many committees for division of common lands, and on those chosen to carry out various actions of the town. The brothers were often serving together on juries at the Plymouth Court, as well as upon inquests. John, Sr., served in the campaign against the Narragansetts with his brother, Joseph Turner.47

On 12 Nov 1645 John married Mary Brewster (4416) , daughter of Elder Jonathan Brewster (3535) (12 Aug 1593-7 Aug 1659) & Lucretia Oldham (1720) (ca Jan 1600-4 Mar 1678/9), in Scituate, MA.66 Born on 16 Apr 1627 in Plymouth, MA.175 Mary died aft 23 Mar 1698 in Scituate, MA.142

3262. John "young son" Turner. Born ca 1624 in Scituate, MA.18 John "young son" died bef 8 Jun 1687 in Scituate, MA.106

"Young son John (so named probably at request of a godfather) lived north-east of Hick's swamp, (near now [1831] Leonard Clap's)."56

“Although an active man he was not physically strong, and was freed from military duty or training. He was active in town affairs on various committees with his elder brogher, John, Sr.; ws one of the local Council of War, and a colonial collector of the excise on ‘tarr, borads and oysters.’ He lived northeast of Hick’s Swamp, on the Country Way, near the old Clap mansion-house at Greenbush.”47

John’s will, dated 25 Oct 1686, proved 8 Jun 1687, mentions sons Japheth and Israel (executors), Jacob, David, and Philip, and daughters Miriam Turner, Anne Green, and Sarah Turner. Wit: Thomas Turner, Thomas Plamer Sr, and Thomas Palmer Jr.106

On 25 Apr 1649 John "young son" married Anne James (2965) , daughter of Philip James (1293) (1600-1605-aft 10 Aug 1638) & Jane [James] (ca 1606-22 Feb 1688/9), in Scituate, MA.73 Born ca 1629.106 Anne died bef 1687. (Anne was not mentioned in her husband’s will).

3263. Thomas Turner. Born ca 1627.18 Thomas died in Nov 1688 in Hingham, MA.27

"Thomas lived near the Harbour (probably on the Kent street lot)."56

He succeeded his father at the tannery south of Colman Hills, but lived on Kent Street on the lot laid out in 1633, the fourth lot from the corner of Kent Street and First Parish Road.47

On 6 Jan 1651/2 Thomas married Sarah Hyland (4068) , daughter of Thomas Hyland (1618) (ca 1604-1683) & Deborah [Hyland], in Scituate, MA.66 Born ca 1634 in England. Sarah was baptized in Tenterden, Kent, Eng., on 9 Mar 1634.47 Sarah died in Nov 1688 in Scituate, MA.73

3264. Lydia Turner. Born ca 1630 in Essex, England. Lydia was baptized in Little Baddow, Essex, on 17 Feb 1629[/30].18

On 15 Aug 1649 Lydia married James Doughty in Scituate, MA.73 Born ca 1624.

James was early in Scituate. He ws a soldier in Philip’s war, and 1678, was paid by the Town for nine weeks’ campaign in 1676.56

In the Scituate records, James’s surname is always spelled Doughty except once Doughtie.

Daughters Mary and Elizabeth married in Scituate, but there is no further record of the rest of the family after 1680.

3265. Mary Turner. Born ca 1635 in Scituate, MA. Mary was baptized in First Parish Church, Scituate, on 25 Jan 1635.73

On 13 Nov 1651 Mary married William Parker in Scituate, MA.90 Born ca 1620 in England. William died in Jul/Oct 1684 in Scituate, MA.

William first married Mary Rawlins, second Mary Turner.

“William Parker was a freeman 1640. He had sixty acres of land north of Edward Foster’s North river lot. His house stood in Parker lane, west of the small brook.”56

    Very little seems to have been written about William Parker of Scituate, Mass., and his children, and this is understandable when one attempts to put together the information from the vital records and his will. There are some births in the Town Records and the Church provides a few baptismal records; the death records are incomplete as well as the marriages. Although he left a well-drawn will, it was impossible from all these date to produce a satisfactory record of the family. After studying the Plymouth Colony records, the names mentioned in the wills and numerous deeds, it was discovered that there were several pitfalls and that confusion reigned supreme in the articles already written.
    The discovery that Thomas Rawlins of Boston, brother of William Parker's first wife, had died without issue, leaving a will naming as heirs his nephews andnieces, helped immeasurably in the final solution and clarified some very puzzling aspects. it proved without a doubt that only one childe (Patience) by the first wife was living in 1681, and that Stephen Totman, the grandson mentioned in William Parker's will, had to be the son of another daughter by the first wife (Mary, deceased), and that the other two children (William and Martha) by this wife had died before 1681 without issue.
    This also brought to light the fact that William Parker had two sons named William, one by each wife; the birth of the first one was recorded but not his death; and the second William was born so much later, probably his last child by his younger second wife, that it seemed logical (as the earlier writers supposed) to place him as son of the William first recorded and as grandson of William1. Also, to complicate matters, there were two daughters named Mary, one by each wife, the first being the oldest of his children. Her birth and baptism were recorded but not her marriage. She had one child and died soon after under tragic circumstances, as will be related. The second Mary was by the second wife and one of the last children. Neither birth nor baptismal record was found for her, but proof came to light from other sources...
    It is not known when William Parker arrived in Scituate, but before 1 Feb. 1638 when he took the Oath of Allegiance. He was a proprietor; a freeman by 1 Dec. 1640; and in 1674 had a grant of land as an old resident. His will, Plymouth Colony Wills and inventories, 4;2:76, dated 1 July 1684, proved 3 Oct. 1684, bequeaths to son Joseph, land; daughter patience Randall, 5s.; grandchild Stephen Totman, 12d; 'to loving wife Mary, ye whole benefit and profit of my whole estate both lands, housing, movables and cattle during her widowhood but if she marry again she shall have but one third for life, then to be returned and divided amongst six of my children namely: Miles, Nathaniel, William, Lidia, mary and Judith, only my son Miles a double portion; my wife to receive debts due and to pay just debts and i name her executrix, she to have power to dispose of so much of any part of my estate necessary to maintain herself and bring up the children.'

3266. Joseph Turner. Born ca 1636/7 in Scituate, MA. Joseph was baptized in First Parish Church, Scituate, on 1 Jan 1636/7.73 Joseph died on 1 Nov 1715 in Scituate, MA.73

Joseph was “called by Pratt ‘a scapegoat and ne’er-do-well’ in his younger years; retrieved his reputation by his services in King Philip’s War, in which he was an Ensign. He was severely wounded in the expedition against the Narragansetts in 1673. On his return to Scituate the twon ‘chose Serj. John Damon to go with Joseph Turner and procure a cure for him; also to support him at the town’s expense so lon as he liveth.’ He recovered, and rejoined the troops under Governor Winslow, and was at the stroming of the Narragansett fort 19 Dec 1675. In 1681 Joseph Turner, having served in the Narragansett fight, is freed from military duty. He was unmarried.”47

3267. Nathaniel Turner. Born ca 1638/9 in Scituate, MA. Nathaniel was baptized in Scituate, MA, on 10 Mar 1638/9.73 Nathaniel died on 31 Jan 1715 in Scituate, MA.73

Nathaniel lived on the paternal farm, east of Colman’s hill.56

From the History and Genealogy of the Briggs Family:47
    Nine generations of his descendants have lived upon this farm. The house now (1936) standing on the property is on the opposite side of the way from the side of the original house and tannery. It is called the ‘Samuel Turner house,’ and is owned by the Scituate Sand and Gravel Company, who used it as a clubhouse for its employees for a few years.

On 29 Mar 1664/5 Nathaniel first married Mehitable Rigby, daughter of John Rigby (ca 1615-) & Isabel [Rigby] (-21 Jun 1673), in Scituate, MA.90 Born ca 1643 in Dorchester, MA. Mehitable was baptized in Dorchester, MA, on 2 Mar 1643. Mehitable died on 22 Mar 1680 in Scituate, MA.73

3268. Daniel Turner. Born ca 1641 in Scituate, MA. Daniel died ca 1699 in Scituate, MA.

“Daniel removed to Barstow’s (now North river) bridge.”56
